How to Cast AI Voices for Your Screenplay Characters

Casting voices for an AI table read is not the same as casting a finished film. You are not trying to discover the one definitive performance of every role. You are building a read that makes the screenplay easy to follow and useful to revise.
That means clarity comes before perfection.
Start with contrast
When two characters share long scenes, give them voices that separate easily. Contrast can come from pitch, age, accent, energy, rhythm, or vocal texture.
If everyone has a similar soft mid-range delivery, a six-person scene becomes difficult to follow even if each individual voice sounds good. A varied cast helps you hear when the writing itself is making characters sound alike.
Start with the characters who speak to each other most often. Once those voices are distinct, fill in the smaller roles around them.
Match energy, not just demographics
Writers often begin with age, gender, and accent. Those are useful filters, but they do not tell you how a character occupies a scene.
Consider qualities such as:
- Fast and impulsive versus careful and measured
- Warm and open versus guarded and dry
- Authoritative versus uncertain
- Polished versus rough-edged
- Intimate versus theatrical
A voice that matches the character's energy will usually teach you more than one chosen only because it matches a line in the character description.
Test voices with the right scene
Do not judge a voice using a neutral greeting if the character spends the screenplay under pressure. Pick a short scene containing the role's normal rhythm and at least one emotional turn.
Listen for three things:
- Can you understand every word?
- Does the voice remain distinct from the other person in the scene?
- Does it leave room for the dialogue, or does the performance style overwhelm the writing?
A useful table-read voice does not need to sound exactly as you imagined. It needs to reveal the page clearly.
Treat the narrator as part of the cast
The narrator can read scene headings, action, and transitions, so its voice affects the pace of the entire screenplay.
Choose something clear and relatively neutral. A highly dramatic narrator may make ordinary action feel overplayed, while a very slow narrator can make a well-paced script feel heavy.
You can also change what the narrator reads. For a dialogue pass, include less narration. For a complete screenplay listen, include the visual information you need to understand the story.
Use acting directions for line-level changes
Do not recast a character because one line sounds wrong. First ask whether that line needs a more specific delivery.

Build custom voices when the library is not enough
Some screenplays need a vocal combination that a general library will not contain: a specific regional quality, an unusual age and energy pairing, or several characters from the same place who still need to sound different.

Keep the cast stable during a revision pass
Once the voices are clear enough, stop auditioning and listen to the screenplay. Constantly changing voices makes it harder to compare one draft with another because the performance variable keeps moving.
Use a stable cast for a full listening pass. Make notes about the writing first. Revisit casting only when a voice consistently prevents you from judging the role.
The best AI voice cast is not necessarily the most impressive collection of individual voices. It is the group that lets you forget the interface and hear the screenplay.
