Getting started

Revising your script without starting over

Sometimes hearing a scene tells you exactly what needs to change. A reply takes too long to get to the point, or a joke would land better without its last sentence. You can try a different wording in Table Read Studio before going back to your draft.

Try the line while the scene is fresh

Pause the read, select the dialogue, and choose the Edit button. In Edit Line, change the Dialogue Text, then choose Regenerate to hear a new performance. You can also adjust the acting direction. Try the line in the scene afterwards: a good change should work with the reply that follows it, too.

Edits are saved in the app. They do not update the screenplay file on your computer. If you decide to keep a change, copy it back into your writing software so it makes it into your next draft.

In the app · The editable fields from Edit Line. Restore brings back the imported words; Regenerate makes a new take.

For a rewrite, return to your screenplay

Table Read Studio is a place to listen to and try out a script. It is not screenwriting software, so you cannot use it to delete lines, insert new scenes, or rearrange the story.

Make those changes in Final Draft, or wherever you write. Save or export the revised screenplay as a Final Draft (.fdx) or Fountain (.fountain) file, then import it from your dashboard. You do not need to delete the earlier draft first.

Your cast comes with you

The app reuses character settings from earlier work when it recognises the character names. Keep names consistent for returning characters, then open Voice Settings after importing and check the cast. New or renamed characters may need a voice, and it is worth checking the narrator settings as well.

Both drafts can appear in your script list, even with the same title. Open the new import to continue, and keep the old one until you are happy that everything came across.

Unchanged lines do not need another take

Audio is matched by the line text and voice. If those match audio you have already generated, the app can reuse it without spending AI credits to read the line again. Changing a voice or the words can require new audio; choosing Regenerate deliberately creates a fresh take and uses credits.

In the download view, green Ready markers show audio available for the current voice. If you are on another device and see Restore audio from cloud, use that before generating anything again. Reuse depends on the matching audio still being available locally or in cloud storage.

In the app · The same readiness legend you can open beside your script. Green means ready; amber means there is audio left to prepare.
